Digital Painting - Girlish Twirls

This digital painting was created in Photoshop for Raster II at Ivy Tech Community College. I used several different brushes to complete this project to best work with the textures represented.
I worked in different layers so I could keep everything organized and focus on the sections without interfering with others.
I started with just a thick rough bristle brush to just make the background simple and remove things that had too much detail in my reference image. I felt that that also give a strength to the specific style of painting I was going for. I wanted to keep a light source evident, as I would work with that to give the shape and dimension needed to the final piece.
I switched to a couple much softer brushes for skin and worked in smaller, smoother strokes.
The hair is a combination of softer and harder brushes to work with the texture of the hair as well as the "messy bun" look. I didn't want to make it too defined as I felt it didn't fit with the style of painting I was creating, but I wanted to also incorperate several "fly aways", and play with the movement of hair.
For her dress I once again used several different brushes, incorporating different textures to create a linen type look, while keeping to the softer undertones to keep to the oil painting feel. Details and shadows were important to get correct here, especially in all the gathers.
